Decision to waive cancer medication fees for expats issued

Kuwait: Health Minister Dr Hilal Al-Sayer recently issued a decision to waive cancer medication fees for expatriates with valid residency permits, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting sources.

Sources explained the expatriates will no longer be required to pay for cancer diagnosis and treatment in all hospitals and medical centers, provided they are legal residents in the country.

Sources said the minister also formed a committee to handle infection control issues in health areas. Sources disclosed the panel will study the spread of infections and propose ways to control them.

On the other hand, Al-Watan Arabic daily has reported that Al-Sayer also issued a decision exempting Bedouns from paying fees for medical service in public health institutions, as long as they have valid identification cards from the Executive Committee for the Affairs of Illegal Residents (Bedouns).

Al-Sayer also ordered the distribution of medicines to Bedouns, similar to those given to Kuwaitis, in accordance with decision number 365/1997. These decisions are part of the humanitarian measures being taken to end the suffering of Bedouns.

According to Assistant Undersecretary for Financial Affairs Mohammad Al-Azmi, the decision entails cancellation of fees for health insurance, as well as services offered in hospitals and health centers.

In another development, Al-Azmi denied rumors on complaints with regards to the payment of financial incentives for consultant physicians tasked to train students in the College of Medicine. He also denied allegations that the academicians in the college appointed to some public hospitals have complained about non-payment of their incentives. He affirmed the academicians receive their financial rewards on time, while the consultants are paid through the college after obtaining approval from the Kuwait University (KU).

Indians in Kuwait celebrate Cricket WC semi-final win over Pakistan

Kuwait: Spirits were rife as thousands of people in Kuwait watched India take on Pakistan in what was touted to be the most challenging game of the tenth cricket World Cup. Expectancy levels were high and apprehensions mounted throughout the course of the match as supporters of both teams’ crowded shops and cafes in areas densely populated by the South Asian subcontinent dwellers.

“I just wish I could stay home but I made up for it by taking a really long lunch break,” claimed Nuferd Fernandes, rooting for the Indian team. “Most of the employees at my workplace didn’t even show up and sick leave applications were just piled up on my boss’s desk.”

A history spanning an equal number of victories and losses between the two teams, coupled with a mutual feeling of competition and rivalry, have over the past few decades somehow manifested itself on the cricket field. “It was a working day yesterday but as soon as I got home, I was glued to the television screen. I think it is the desire of both countries to normalize the relations between India and Pakistan and a cricket match is definitely a great diplomatic effort. The entire Pakistani community was enthusiastic and excited because it’s been a long time the two neighboring countries faced each other on the field,’ remarked Kashif Zaman, the press attaché of the Embassy of Pakistan in Kuwait.

Internet speeds were down in Kuwait, as many employers chose to watch the games on their computer screens, a number of friendly bets were placed on the intense match, and stakes were high, as a couple of fans bit their nails when wickets fell. “I was in such a frenzy, I couldn’t sit still,” said Asma Khan, a staunch supporter of the Pakistan team, who screamed herself hoarse, every time the green jerseys scored a boundary.

As such, hundreds of spectators got together at restaurants in and around Salmiya, where large screens were put up; gearing the crowd to create a ruckus every time the game favored either side.

Music blasted from cars, horns were blown and fireworks lit the skies as hundreds of team India supporters reached the streets in celebration , as India reached the finals of Cricket World Cup 2011, while some tempers flared among the team Pakistan supporter, others beat a silent retreat back to their homes.

Kuwait has 7th highest rate of diabetes worldwide

Kuwait: Kuwait has the seventh highest rate of diabetes worldwide, announced endocrine gland and diabetes specialist at Mubarak Hospital and fellow of the Joslin Diabetes Center at Harvard University, Dr Waleed Al-Dhahei. He also warned diabetic citizens not to be fooled by the claims of some German medical centers to be able to cure diabetes in exchange for KD 9,000, reported Al-Watan.

Al-Dhahei stressed that many patients often resort to going to such medical centers and return with no changes. He added that the European Union warned against dealing with such centers, which have been seen advertising in Kuwait and other Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) states to attract more diabetic patients.

Meanwhile, Al-Dhahei said that there is much hope for diabetics today with new medical advancements in treating the disease, such as new medicines and technologies that have emerged from the use of stem cells. “The future still holds very good news for diabetics,” he said, asking the Dasman Diabetes Center to reconsider their treatment policies in order to live up to the purpose of its founding by the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah.

Furthermore, Al-Dhahei warned that the rate of diabetes was growing worldwide at an alarming rate. He said that school curriculums should include special chapters to help increase the public’s awareness about the disease. “In Kuwait one sixth of the population is diabetic,” he pointed out, adding that the real threat of the disease lies in not detecting it in children.

This problem can be fought by integrating knowledge about diabetes in school curriculums, holding special school competitions on the topic over the next coming years, having more Ministry of Health control over school meals and banning fast food,” he stressed.

The doctor noted that 70 percent of Kuwait’s population is obese, 80 percent of them have unhealthy diets and that 60 percent of them do not practice any sport. “People must play more sports, reduce their amount of smoking and be subject to early detection and diagnosis programs. Special surveys need to be conducted and medical teams must be trained on the latest strategies to fight against this disease,’ he advised.
